Update
Following up on our previous bulletin, “A Primer of Hazardous Area Safety,” we are advised that some service providers are still not in compliance when utilizing and deploying equipment for on-site detection, monitoring, and measurement of atmospheric methane (CH4) emissions. Equipment must be Marked Hazardous Area Certified and classified as either Intrinsically Safe or Explosion-Proof. This Certification approval must be clearly displayed on the device with the Certification Agency Marking. Non-compliance could lead to serious consequences, including potential harm to personnel and damage to property.
CH4 emission detection, monitoring, and metering equipment require an electrical power source. Any equipment affixed to a flammable gas vent operates within Class 1 Zone 0 or Division 1 Hazloc areas, whereby an explosive hazard can always or sometimes exist under normal operating conditions. Any equipment must be designed and engineered so as not to trigger an explosion.
Warning
Some service providers use labels to suggest that their device has a Hazardous Area “Classification” instead of “Certification.” For example, service providers manufacture a piece of equipment that is built with some certified components from parts suppliers, but the entire unit itself has not been Hazardous Area Certified by an approved agency. In other words, the unit is not proven and tested to be Intrinsically Safe or Explosion Proof.
Certification ensures safety, significantly reduces risks, provides regulatory compliance, and limits liability. It’s crucial to adhere to these standards to safeguard people, property, and business. Using non-certified equipment is dangerous and could lead to catastrophic incidents and lawsuits. The importance of these safety standards cannot be overstated.
The Ventbuster® is Hazardous Area Certified as a Class 1 Zone 0 (Division 1) device. It is designed and engineered as Intrinsically Safe for working in all hazardous areas and explosive gas environments.
